👩‍🍳 How to make Chakka Puzhukku

  1. Grind coconut paste (3 mins): Pulse grated coconut, turmeric, green chillies, shallots, and garlic in a mixer with 2 tbsp water to a coarse paste — do not grind smooth; some texture is essential.
  2. Temper (2 mins): Heat coconut oil in a small pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter fully. Add curry leaves — they will crackle. Pour over the jackfruit mixture and stir through immediately.
  3. Serve: Mound into bowls. Serve hot with kanji (rice porridge) or eat on its own as a standalone breakfast with fish pickle on the side.

Chakka Puzhukku is the traditional monsoon breakfast of rural Kerala — when jackfruit is plentiful and every homestead tree yields fruit, families steam or boil the tender pods and eat them with coconut and curries as a complete meal. ---
